Immunization requirements logo

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we want to remind families of the immunization requirements for all students attending schools in Newport-Mesa Unified School District. Ensuring that your child is up-to-date with their vaccinations is crucial for the health and safety of our entire school community.

The District adheres to State immunization laws, requiring valid vaccine records for school entry and participation. Personal or religious belief exemptions are no longer accepted in place of required vaccines. Immunization checkpoints occur during entry into preschool, entry into Kindergarten, the transition between elementary and middle school (6th-7th grade), the transition between middle and high school (8th-9th grade), as well as students enrolled as new to NMUSD in any grade level.

Required  Immunizations

  • Transitional Kindergarten (TK) - 6th grade
    • 4 Polio
    • 5 DTaP
    • 2 MMR
    • 3 Hepatitis b
    • 2 varicella
    • Oral health exam - TK, K or 1st*

*Whichever is the first year the student attends public school.

  • 7-12th grade
    • TK-6th immunizations, plus TDAP

Submission

If you are new to the District or your child is transitioning to TK/K, 7th, or 9th grade, you must upload your child’s immunization documentation during the online Aeries enrollment process, beginning July 27. Your child’s Immunization records must be up-to-date and submitted before the start of the school year.

Medical Exemptions

If your doctor needs to file a medical exemption, including a temporary one, this must be done through the California Immunization Registry (CAIR) system. This will be the only way for a student to start school without being fully immunized. Those students not yet due for their next dose as per the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) recommended timeline in a series may be enrolled conditionally.

Special Circumstances

Students with an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), foster youth, and students covered under the McKinney-Vento Act have different guidelines. Please contact our Health Services team at 949-515-6730 for more information.
